WSI: Much of Western Europe to Return to Cooler Temperatures in August

Warm, Dry Summer Weather to be Less Frequent Going Forward

Andover, Mass. (24 July 2013) — Weather Services International (WSI) expects temperatures for the upcoming period (August-October) to average lower than normal across UK, Iberia, southern Norway, and the western half of the mainland, with above-normal temperatures elsewhere. Said WSI chief meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford:

“We have seen a dramatic reversal of the pattern during July, as high pressure and very warm, dry weather has become established across western Europe, a pattern which has not observed very often since 2006. Obviously, the difficult forecast problem heading into August is determining whether this new regime will persist, or if a return to lower pressure and cooler, gloomier conditions is in the cards for western Europe. The latest model guidance does suggest that a return to lower pressure is on the way by early August, but historical data suggests that the July pattern is more likely than not to persist into August. For now, we have generally persisted our previous forecast, which is slanted more towards the idea of a return to cooler temperatures across much of western Europe.”

In August, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Cooler than normal southern Sweden/Norway, warmer than normal elsewhere
UK – Warmer than normal, except for Southeast
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except for western France and Poland
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Portugal and far Southeast

In September, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Cooler than normal southern Sweden/Norway, warmer than normal elsewhere
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Poland
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except SW Iberia and far Southeast

In October, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Warmer than normal
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal west, warmer than normal east
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal west, warmer than normal east
