Weather Services International: Recent Moderation of Extreme Cold to Last into February Followed by Sharp Return to Cold Heading into March

Milder Mid-Winter Period, But More Extreme Cold Likely Late

Andover, MA, January 24, 2010 — WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the approaching period (February-April) to average lower than normal across the UK, Nordic regions, and parts of northern mainland Europe, with above-normal temperatures confined to the rest of the mainland.

“The recent two-month stretch of persistently negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has ended, leaving a more seasonable pattern across Europe,” said WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford. “We think that this more atmospherically-relaxed pattern will persist well into February, confining any below-normal temperatures to northern regions. At some point later in February or early March, we do expect a return to more strongly negative NAO conditions as the La Nina event weakens and tropical Pacific convection begins to play a bigger role.”

“At that point, we expect a return to more severe and widespread below-normal temperatures across much of Europe, lasting well into spring. The biggest uncertainty for the February forecast is that the strong negative NAO pattern will return more quickly than we currently expect. We are monitoring these developments daily going forward, and will be sending out alerts if we see any signs of the colder negative NAO pattern re-emerging” Dr. Crawford added.

In February, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:

Nordic Region * – Colder than normal, except extreme southern Sweden/Finland
UK* – Warmer than normal, except extreme north
Northern Mainland* – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland * – Warmer than normal

In March, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:

Nordic Region – Colder than normal
UK – Colder than normal
Northern Mainland – Colder than normal
Southern Mainland – Colder than normal, except parts of Iberia and Southeast

In April, WSI forecasts:

Nordic Region – Colder than normal
UK – Colder than normal
Northern Mainland – Colder than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except France/Iberia

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook for the March-May period on 21 February.
