Weather Services International: Warm Period Expected Across Most of Europe; Below-Normal Temperatures Confined to Iberia and Southern France

Warmest Summer Weather in UK Expected in August

Andover, MA, June 20, 2011 — WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the upcoming summer period (July-August) to average higher than normal across all areas in Europe except for southern France and Iberia.

“As we entered June, the familiar pattern of cool and wet conditions became re-established across the UK and parts of extreme western Europe, as has been the case for each of the last four years. Meanwhile, very warm and dry conditions have been the norm across eastern Europe and Scandinavia.” said WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford. “This pattern, driven by the recent trend of more high-latitude atmospheric blocking, will likely persist into at least part of July, even as the blocking relaxes as we expect. By late summer, we expect a different pattern to emerge, with widespread below-normal temperatures across southern Europe, and warm, dry weather across the UK, Scandinavia, and northern Europe. The best chance for hot weather in the UK will come in August. In general, the very warm Atlantic Ocean will continue to drive a bias towards above-normal temperatures in most locations for the upcoming three-month period.”

In July, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:

Nordic Region* – Warmer than normal, except southern Norway
UK* – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland* – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland* – Warmer than normal

In August, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:

Nordic Region – Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except Iberia

In September, WSI forecasts:

Nordic Region – Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook on 25 July.
