Weather Services International: Another Cool Summer Ahead for UK, Northern European Mainland

Persistence of Negative Phase of North Atlantic Oscillation, Cool Ocean Temperatures to Keep Heat Away Again

Andover, MA April 19, 2010 — WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the approaching period (May-July) to average higher than normal across Scandinavia and the northern half of the UK, with cooler-than-normal temperatures across the southern half of the UK and the mainland.

“The persistence of the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) shows no signs of abating, resulting in expectations for another cool summer season across the UK and the northern mainland,” said WSI Chief Meteorologist, Dr. Todd Crawford. “Warmer weather, relative to normal, will be confined to northern and central Scandinavia as well as parts of southeast Europe, where late summer may be notably warm. While May might be rather mild across the major cities of the UK and northern mainland, we feel this will be short-lived as the combination of the persistent NAO, abundant soil moisture levels, and very cool ocean temperatures surrounding the continent should increase the odds for another cool summer.”

In May, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:

Scandinavia – Warmer than normal, except Finland
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except eastern sections
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except eastern sections

In June, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:

Scandinavia – Warmer than normal, especially coastal Norway
UK – Warmer than normal north, cooler than normal south
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal

In July, WSI forecasts:

Scandinavia – Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal north, cooler than normal south
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except eastern sections

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook (for the June-August and July-September periods) on 24 May.
