WSI: Evidence Continues to Suggest Another Cool, Wet Summer Across UK and Western Europe

Low Pressures and Northerly Flow Will Again be Favored While Hot, Dry Weather Expected in Eastern Europe and Western Russia

Andover, Mass. (24 April 2013) — Weather Services International (WSI) expects temperatures for the upcoming period (May-July) to average lower than normal across UK, Western Europe, and the more densely populated regions of Norway and Sweden, with higher-than-normal temperatures across Eastern Europe and western Russia.

“Below-normal temperatures have continued to be the norm across northern Europe during the first half of April,” said Dr. Todd Crawford, WSI chief meteorologist. “As we head into May, we expect a pattern of cool and wet conditions to become established across much of Western Europe, while Eastern Europe and Western Russia warms up and dries out. Further, recent trends in climate model forecasts and our proprietary analysis are in good consensus that a similar pattern will be the dominant one this summer. This summer pattern has been the rule for the last six years, as northerly flow and lower pressures have dominated much of Western Europe with hot, dry conditions common across eastern Europe and western Russia.”

In May, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Warmer than normal
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except far eastern sections
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Alps regions into Southeast Europe

In June, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Cooler than normal southern half of Norway/Sweden, warmer than normal elsewhere
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except far eastern sections
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal, except northern parts of Iberia

In July, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Warmer than normal, except extreme southern parts of Sweden/Norway
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, cooler than normal west
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, cooler than normal west
