Weather Services International: Warm Summer Expected on European Mainland; Below-Normal Temperatures Confined to UK and Norway

Most Significant Warmth Expected Across Eastern Half of Mainland

Andover, MA, May 23, 2011 — WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the upcoming summer period (June-August) to average lower than normal across most of the UK and southern Norway, with higher-than-normal temperatures elsewhere, especially in eastern Europe.

“After another cold winter, spring has been very warm across much of Europe, with exceedingly dry conditions in parts of the mainland,” said WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford. “As we head towards summer, we continue to expect warm temperatures to dominate on the mainland, with the largest anomalies across the eastern half of Europe. West Atlantic troughing should help keep the UK and Scandinavia cooler and wetter than other regions, especially during the first half of the summer. The best chance for hot weather in the UK will come in August, as the early summer pattern relaxes a bit.”

“While the lack of rain across much of the mainland has been rather significant, we do not expect a repeat of the summers of 1976 or 2003, when exceedingly hot and dry conditions were the rule across much of Europe,” Dr. Crawford added.

In June, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:

Nordic Region* – Cooler than normal
UK* – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland* – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland* – Warmer than normal

In July, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:

Nordic Region – Warmer than normal, except southern Norway
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal

In August, WSI forecasts:

Nordic Region – Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook on 20 June.
